CONTESTANTS & AUDIENCE MEMBERS:
You, the performer, should have properly entered this contest by submitting to
Huntsville Superstar your personal information per the online
contestant entry form, your audition packet which includes a one minute CD of
you singing, and your $25.00 (non
refundable) entry fee.
Assuming you have done all
of that, you will be assigned a number which will be your number throughout the
entire competition.
The audition CDs
will be reviewed by our judges in a closed listening session. After
listening to all the CDs, our judges will select up to 40 contestants who
will progress on to the live performance portion of the contest. These
contestants will receive notification by a personal phone call from us by
(no later than) Thursday evening June 17th, 2010.
Then, around noon on Friday June 18th, we will post (on the website) the names of everyone
selected to advance to the live portion of this competition. If your name appears on
this list or if you receive a call - congratulations, you will subsequently go on to compete in the live portion of
the Huntsville Superstar 2010 summer talent competition
series which will take place at the Old Town Theater on Saturday's June
26th, July 10th, and July 17.
You will have become an official
contestant, competing against others to win $1,000.00, a recording opportunity,
and the honor of being named the 2010 Huntsville Superstar.
Everyone else (family & friends) will be considered part of
the voting audience and must purchase a ticket at a cost of $10.00 to enter the theater
and attend the show.
Due to the nature of this
show along with limited theater seating, there will be NO complimentary tickets. The Old Town Theater is
limited in its seating capacity, so please encourage those who wish to come
and see you perform, and vote for you, to purchase advance tickets for the shows they wish to
attend by logging onto Huntsville Superstar Ticket
Information.
JUDGING CRITERIA - The manner in which contestants will be rated:
1). OPINIONS ABOUT THE
QUALITY OF MUSIC AND MUSICAL PERFORMANCES VARY AND ARE EXTREMELY SUBJECTIVE
- ESPECIALLY AMONGST THOSE WHO ARE EITHER CONSIDERED TO BE, OR WHO CONSIDER
THEMSELVES TO BE "QUALIFIED" TO RENDER AN OPINION ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.
2). HUNTSVILLE SUPERSTAR
IS A CONTEST WHEREIN EACH CONTESTANT COMPETES BY PERFORMING A SONG BEFORE A
LIVE VOTING AUDIENCE AND A PANEL OF JUDGES.
3). Our Judges - In
addition to having adequate musical backgrounds (which can be extremely
subjective in the arena of musical opinion), our judges are people who are
mostly well known throughout the community for their high level of character
and integrity. All of them meet and surpass the Huntsville Superstar
organization's judging standards which in addition to many other things
requires a judge to demonstrate: 1). A
high level of appreciation and
understanding of all musical styles and performance, and 2). a strong
commitment toward upholding the
strict
principle of impartiality.
Additionally, none of the judges, and/or any member of the Huntsville
Superstar staff or organization may be related to any of the current
contestants.
4). The Judging
Criteria - In this contest the judges are ultimately looking for someone
who presents themselves on stage as an all around superstar. The areas of
performance that will be critiqued and rated are stage presence, vocal
quality, and showmanship. These areas include such things as dress and
on-stage appearance & expression, pitch (intonation), diction, dynamics &
projection, expressive energy, overall showmanship, and crowd response.
SONGS &
MUSIC:
THIS APPLIES ONLY TO THE FIRST SHOW. FURTHER
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SUBSEQUENT SHOWS (song length, style, etc.) ARE
STILL FORTHCOMING.
So, here’s how it will work. Unless you plan
on accompanying yourself on guitar, you must submit to us (this means
that we must receive in our hands) – one (1)
well labeled (easy to read and understand) CD that contains the one (1)
song track that you will sing to. Please make sure that your song track
is burnt onto a CD, and that your CD will work on ALL CD Players. And,
for the first show, please keep the length of your song to approximately
1 minute - and absolutely no longer than 1 minute and 20 seconds.
It will be a good idea to test your CD out on
several different CD players before submitting it to us. Our music
editing equipment is home made CD friendly, as long as your CD is properly made.
So, if you do it right (or have it done right), our equipment should
read it just fine - but, be sure and do it right!
Also, make sure that your CD contains only one (1) song. Please DO NOT
submit a CD that contains multiple tracks.
Additionally, it must be a well labeled CD with
your name, and the name of your song, and (VERY IMPORTANT) must be NO
LONGER THAN 1 MINUTE 20 SECONDS IN LENGTH. That’s (1) one minute long. This means
that on the initial show, you will have about a minute and 20 seconds to perform
and dazzle the audience and judges. This is equivalent to about the
length of a quick verse and a chorus. Make it work! It can be done, as
performers do it on TV all the time.
With as many 40 performers in the initial
round, the show must flow along swiftly, and without any hitches so that we
don't lose our audience. This is why
we need
your initial show CD by no later than Friday June 18th!!! Editing music
and burning it onto a CD is an extremely common thing these days. If you
can’t do it – find a friend who can, or email us at:
info@huntsvillesuperstar.com and we will direct you to someone who
is in the business of doing that.
IMPORTANT – WE MUST RECEIVE YOUR FIRST SHOW CD BY THE CLOSING OF BUSINESS
FRIDAY JUNE 18th, 2010, AS WE WILL NEED TO TRANSFER
ALL CONTESTANT'S SONGS ONTO ONE MASTER SHOW CD.
Each individual
performance will be filmed, and if things run smoothly in post
production, will subsequently made available to view
online by sometime Wednesday evening following each show. Because of this –
the show must flow without any hitches, thus the reason for the master
CD, so DO NOT try to get away without fulfilling this relatively simple
request. WE NEED YOUR CD by Friday June 18, 2010.
TIME & PLACE:
You will ultimately need
to be prepared to sing in three (3) different live shows which will take
place at the Old Town Theater
located at: 1023 12th St,
Huntsville, TX 77340. The theater phone number is: 936-293-8681.
If you've never seen the Old Town Theater, you can check it out at:
www.towntheater.org
Showtime is 7:00pm on June 26th, July 10th,
and 17th. The doors to the theater will open to the general public
at: 6:00pm. However, for the initial show, we will need you
to be there (attentive and ready for instruction and a dress rehearsal -
sound check) absolutely no later than
3:00pm. On the day of the first
show, there will need to
ample time for questions and answers along with a complete dress rehearsal
(sound check), and any last minute modifications. Remember, there could be as many as
sixty (40) performers in the initial show. It can turn very chaotic
unless we all manage it right! So please, be
on time, and be prepared to participate appropriately in putting
on a great show, and Huntsville Superstar will be a great
experience for everyone.
BACKSTAGE:
Backstage
protocol is one of the most important aspects of any live show - especially
one with potentially this many performers. The
backstage area will be strictly monitored and managed by our qualified, and
easily identifiable stage management team. These people will be the absolute
BOSS, BIG CHEESE, and FINAL SAY of any thing that happens backstage.
Their
first concern of course will always be you, but your obedience to their word
is of the utmost importance, as they will have the authority to remove you
from the show if needs be.
Only
contestants that are under the age of fourteen (14) are allowed to have
someone accompany (be with) them backstage, and even then - by only one (1) person (a
parent or friend). This should be the same person to accompany them in or out of
the dressing rooms. Boys may only be accompanied by a male in the men’s
dressing room, and Girls may only be accompanied by a female in the Women’s
dressing room. The person who accompanies you backstage must remain with you
backstage throughout the entire show.
Due to the lack of back stage space,
all other contestants must see to their own backstage needs, and may NOT be
accompanied backstage by anyone. These backstage rules will (out of
necessity) be strictly enforced so once again, please remember that there
may be a very large number of contestants back stage. We absolutely MUST
maintain backstage control for safety as well as carrying out a smooth
flowing show.
We thank you sincerely ahead of time for your cooperation in
this matter.
THE JUDGES & AUDIENCE VOTE:
The audience will vote (both live and online), and their vote will have great impact
and influence on each contestants standing throughout the contest, but the
judges will collectively make the
ultimate
decision as to the final outcome of the contest.
